We close out the year with a comparison review of the Toyota 86 TRD/Subaru BRZ vs Mazda Miata and Honda S2000. We cover the pros and cons of everything these generations had to offer and show the technical break down of each. While there are other sporty cars available like the Civic Type R, Nissan 370Z and Ford Mustang, these three cars are very similar in mindset. In the end we break down the winning formulas and talk about the 2022 Subaru BRZ.

A simply fantastic video from you guys - one that we knew you'd do superbly. Enjoyed watching all of this, and we hope to see you guys again before too long. Great work.
Jack Holmes
Thanks paul and Todd. Hopefully next year our planned meet actually happens. Look forward to seeing you guys at the next event.

S2000 is the best for the money and plus more power!!
John Techwriter
If the ND2’s body roll and squirrelly rear end at the limit are an issue for you, the problem is solved by replacement sway bars from Flyin Miata, costing only $250. (The front one takes time to install.) The base Sport model costs thousands less than the Club and if you don’t autocross is all you need. One thing you don’t need if you want a pure sports car is that silly optional folding roof.

Everyone of them is a winner but I wanna the Miata.

I've been waiting for someone to make this video ! Fantastic ! Thank you.

Nice comparison. I went with the 86 because it's my one car and I hate convertibles. I wish they would make a real, lightweight hardtop Miata.
James6688
Checked the membership fee for the track, well let's just say if I had that much of money, I wouldn't even consider buying any of these 3 cars.
Patrick Bateman
UK BRZ owner. This car makes me feel nothing when driving it spirtedley on road. In fact i get more joy from it when driving slow. I think stock it understeers too much. Mines a 19 MY. For me it's engine lacking in character and torque, soft bushings feel from the rear, harsh damping. I know all these things can be improved but as a stock car just no for me. I wonder if the 22 will be the car it should have always been..so agree what they say about my car. As stock its not setup properly for a true drivers car.

Was it just me who noticed how dry and oil leak free that Honda is?

Thanks for making this comparison!! I really appreciate the work that you do!!

Great video. You really deserve a million subs.

Wonder how a CTR would hang.

I own a S2000 year 2002 for 11 years now and i'am still in love.
It has 184000km now and it is still great fun to drive.
I like the steering feel very much, bit it can be very tricky on wet and/or at the limit. I would not like the car as a daily, not so practical and it is loud. BUT as a weekendcar on a sunny day or trackcar it is a dream.
With some small twists you can track the car on and on and on without big costs. It is a high reving car to 9000rpm and in vtec the early models can drink some oil. No problem when you control the level often and refill.
I use the car for a sunny daytrip or holiday in the Alpes and i tracked the car on the Nürburgring and Spa Francorchamps.
Ofcourse nowadays a lot of cars, even family cars, are faster and have much more torque but you have to drive the car to understand what the car is all about.
You can relax and cruise the car but you can also step on the gas on the gas on a twisty B road and have a lot of fun or even the track the car on the limit.
After a day of fun it is a rewarding feeling the car is giving you! I can't say it good in words, you must experience it by yourself.
Some specs of my S2000:
Model 2002
17 inch OEM Honda wheels, original in 2002 was 16 inch
Yokohama AD08 R tyres, awesome tyre on this car and much better than the original Bridgestones.
Goodridge steel brakelines
Brakes front Tarox F2000 discs with Tarox compound 114 pads
Brakes rear, normal discs and pads like ATE or Bosch
One of the best changes is the KW V3 suspension, an investment but that changes the ride very very much in positiv way. If alignment is good than road holding is also good at high speeds over 200kmh, despite the bad aero.
The car has no big aftermarket spoilers, it looks stock, only a bit lower.
With the KW suspension the car is almost not diving anymore so the back stays much more stable than stock.
Chandy Ab
Hey, very cool. WHY does he say the 86brz will rot in the winter driving? What’s different about it specifically to call this out @savagegeese
Louis C
The owner of a local rust proofing shop said to me recently that my clean / stock AP2 S2000 got more attention from staff and customers then when they had a DeLorean in the shop. “Hey that’s Johnny Tran’s car!” - The Fast and the Furious. Not sure you’d get that reaction with either of the other 2 cars in this test. Love love love my S2K ❤️❤️❤️
S2K GREECE
All beautiful cars and are all winners. Coming from an ap1 owner.
Bob C
I have all three (Miata is an NB) in my garage and have driven each extensively. As Pau Prat commented, "Buying any of those cars is a win for enthusiasts". I couldn't agree more and absolutely love each car for what it is.
Brendon Wolfel
Here’s what you do guys/girls. Buy a Miata and invest two grand in sway bar and suspension upgrades (Yellow konis and springs)

Have these guys not heard of the Toyota 86 racing series? They carry on about the MX5 being raced but fail to mention the 86RS

Just discovered your channel. Really great video. Perfect balance of enthusiasm, technical competence and well informed opinion. I look forward to reviewing your past videos and your future releases.

Fantastic end summary!

All of them will lose because they are shitty cars.

miata rf for days. i just wish it had a mazdaspeed variant. a stock turbo variant would be a casual tuners dream.
Caleb Nation
Idk if I trust mazda after the way they handled the 2004/2005 Mazdaspeed miata. To make it good you need a new turbo, new exhaust manifold, new intercooler, and usually a bigger exhaust depending on power goals, so at that point you’ve spent the money you’d spend buying a turbo kit from the ground up.
sixeight 86
these cars are not for drag racing. the racing that shows these cars’ true potentials is the corners.
Mazda Guy
S2k doesn’t compete with the Miata or 86 it looks a decade older looks like it’s from 2009
calpitoc
What a great video. I'm sure people at one point or another have crossed shopped all three of these cars. I know I did. In the end, the choice was easy. S2000.
I hope you guys can get your hands on a 991.2 GT3 manual. I'd love to see a review of that car on this channel.
Chris
The statement about the ND2 that it's just better on the street says all the majority of us need to know. I wonder what the % is of drivers actually track their cars? I would bet it's a low percentage. However, your comment re: body roll is accurate. She had the ND1 and upgraded to the ND. I just bought my wife some purpose-made (for the ND RF) lowering springs that improve roll and overall handling. That should correct the only real negative this car has.
Kerem Saraç
i did not watch this but,
S2k can not be on the road... simply can not pass the emissions test of today.
otoh Mazda & Subaru are highly surpressed engines.. plus new safety regulations makes cars heavier. especially Mazda's incredible achievement can be overlooked in such a test.
so this is not a fair test imo....
EngiNetion
S2000's design is still as modern as these rivals
Watch!
Miata is always the....wait a minute😅😂😂😂😂

i sold my FRS and bought a WRX, now i want a 86 so bad.

Light weight flywheel and 4.44 final drive make the S2000 a whole other car.
Vangkou Thor
FRS BRZ does not have “usable” rear seats. Yea if you are a baby or don’t mind dying on an accident if you are anywhere over 3.5ft tall lol Literally the WORSE car to have been produced besides the GR “SuPrA” in the last decade. Lol
Maple Nation
S2000 probably brings a smile just in look, Miata makes me want to wreck it into a tree, and the 86 brings back Deja Vu that only brings a smile, happiness, and wonderful nostalgia. fuck mazda.
Maple Nation
Did you say midwest? I Live in Southwestern illinois!

Once again S2000 comes out on top! The only car I have owned for more than 9 years!
juan sanchez
BRZ is so played out, everyone has one and its slow af.
Stevie Jo
My pick is the 86. Toyota has a build your own program, and I can get one with no luxury gift pack crap, but MT, exaust, lowering springs, brakes. Cost? Under $32,000 brand new, factory fresh!! Gimme gimme gimme
Dreamy
Everyone who hasn’t driven a Honda S2000:
Why tf is a 20 year old Honda still here next to these modern Subaru BRZ’s and Mazda Miata’s? 🤨😒🙄
Everyone who owns a Honda S2000: 🤠
Paul Stabin
All amazing in their own way. I have only driven two of them. S2000 is very special. Flawed. But special. The S2K club version fixed handling issues, and is the pick. All versions have huge power dips. The Miata is the popular choice, but always leaned too much, us too cramped, and too slow. Compared to an MR2 for example, which is a much better driver- think poor man's Lotus-the Miata just doesn't cut it. The BRZ /86/FRS is pure- but there are better options for the money. Looking at you Civic SI. Type R, or Yaris GR. Or even a Veloster N. Or a 280ZX or 350Z for something with the same RWD front engine layout. You would probably even have more fun in an RX8. Which has very controllable oversteer. And is cheap enough you can keep feeding that other Mazda sports car the oil it burns like gas.
bigusdickus23
All these asshurt commenters saying how the S2000 is so boring flooring it at 90mph on the autobahn or going 25 in a city. Ok? Nobody asked for your opinion. It's the funnest car on winding rural roads by far. The autobahn is not a driver's situation. You put cruise control on and go to sleep.
Erik Lau
The best performance car is not the car u test but the car that test u so it seem the s2000 is that car.
Thatligarage feat. Subyking
I think the s2000 wins every time
jjuk jkjiok
How would you compare the fiat 124 to the miata comments you mentioned, better off the line with turbo?
Jim C
Mr.Geese, you have delivered exactly what I wanted to finally see. A simple fucking drag race between these three cars. Thank you, now I can die happy.
Matthew Beacham
Never seen this channel, but the guy giving his input about these cars I could swear I met at the Hotel Hershey when I was a valet there. I’m driving an suv now, but hope to be able to pick up one of these three in a year or two.
savagegeese
You probably confused me some other boring white guy!
nard1000
This video was one for the ages for enthusiast drivers. I have driven 2 of the 3 and found the observations to be spot on. I have yet to drive the brz/ frs car, but I very much appreciate the detailed, but no-fluff, no nonsense commentary on all the cars. I feel like I can plumb the used car marketplace with confidence and know what to look for and what could or should be modified. Thanks again!
Mike D
The 370Z absolutely deserves the be mentioned against these cars, and is possibly a better all around car then all three!
Bro Shido
My GT86 with 1200$ worth upgrades is 3-3.5s faster than in stock form here on a 1 minute 30s circuit near me, the tires are the main problem with the car
Ivo Starmans
I own a Miata NC.If I gonna excange it, It would be one of those 3.
Dylan Lewis
Incredible video with 3 amazing cars that we will look back on fondly for decades to come, especially as the car market dramatically shifts towards the milquetoast demographic. After driving a 500HP Alfa Giulia, I expected to be utterly disappointed getting back into my NA Miata. And to my surprise, I actually had a better time driving on the street than the Alfa.
It makes you realize how special and rare cars like these are. You can add power all you want, but it doesn't always make a better street car. 0-60 in 3 seconds means the fun is over quick if you want to keep your license. I shudder to think what the new car landscape will look like 10 years from now, but god I hope cars like these stick around. I want the next generation to experience them.
Mike
I miss my Silverstone AP2, dearly..

Love your video and the efforts you guys put in. Subscribed for sure
Gettinscurvy
My Mazda3 got totaled last year right as the 30th anniversary editions were rolling off the ship. I managed to pick up a 30AE soft top and I drove it daily from the summer all through winter here in MD. I'll never look back. Miata is always the answer (with maybe a Mazda5 parked next to it for ferrying the baby around).
Kraig Cline
Stock for stock, yes the s2k is the better car.. but to say it out performed the mx5?! What tires were on the club? Was it the crap stock tires? If so, then put RS4's on the club too and watch it blow the s2k away. I'm a tad biased though, I own a ND1, and it is my only car.
Mr Paul
is not fair...s2000 technology r so old, miata and brz r basically 10ys ahead the honda
Pandamasque
Say whatever you like, but your smiles speak volumes. MX5 is the one. The onboard footage reminds me of when I raced a '65 Lotus Elan in a sim.
CobraSniper117
Well, I can tell you one thing based on the title. If all 3 had great drivers, the S2000 would win.
Vallas Jo
Have a 2001, AP1 S2000 for 5 years with 55,000 miles now and is my daily driver....... FK8 2019 is my weekender.
Terry Oxandale
Would agree with the 86 assessment except that it becomes a different car with slight and inexpensive changes. Decreased height then provides the camber needs, slight increases in spring rate improve balance without overworking the OEM dampers, and dedicated wheels with 245s all produce a transformed feel that rewards the driver with much more stability, confidence, and performance in, through, and out of the turns.
Luis DJ - Intecnogy
Awesome comparo! I was thinking Mista but probly I will wait for the upcoming BRZ
Michael Battista
"second after hitting subscribe, my dad came back from the store after 22 years" - love that.
Ace of Spades
I bought a '16 ND1 ST + MT with 45k miles in red at the onsent of CV19 (March) for $10k OTD. I really can't think of a better way to spent that little on a new(ish) car to have the amount of fun that I did over the summer. I can hold this thing for 4-5 years with little to no depreciation and all I had to do was change tires, pads, fluids. The only custom items I've added are a stubby tail and carbon fiber floor mats. Eventually I could go to FM and get a BBR kit and proper coilovers but I'm not that motivated ATM. I thought I'd want brake upgrades (wildwood kit) but it's not needed for street use. I'm sure the S2k is more "special" and the BRZ can likely be made more capable if you dump a ton of cash. Some day I'll step up to an ND2 but they are still $25k+ and to be frank I like the extra shift into 3rd/4th gear for everyday driving where the ND2 you'd likely be one gear behind.
Claudio Matricciano
I'll take the S2000 any day of my life over those two pieces of crap.
Vario Felce
put some camber in the 86 and it's a track monster
Lorenzo
this is, simply put, the best youtube video ever made
thank you

You're literally the only one I turn off my adblocker for...thanks for the great content.
AyJay
Man, that power to weight ratio really shows on the ND, I was pretty surprised to see it take off like that compared to the other 2 cars
Tj Tucker
Like a affordable, reliable, Japanese lotus.
Samuel Fernandes
I personally prefer the BRZ, but any of those are great choices
Rick Rolled
hopefully the 2022 BRZ fixes alot of the issues here
Terry Chao
86's problem is its basically design to be the successor of the old 86... corners are cut extremely by subaru unlike honda/mazda.
But, it's still a very good touge/canyon car......like the old 86......>__>
Tj Tucker
@Terry Chao oh I agree, I’m just saying even The DK said the same things you said.
Terry Chao
@Tj Tucker I didn't say it aint great, I only said EXTREME corners were cut from subaru to make the new 86. Which is why you get them as is.
Tj Tucker
keiichi tsuchiya has said it’s a great follow up to the AE86. He said turn in is better
19hundo c
All these cars are fine and I understand the comparison but you can get a c6 corvette for 15k that would decimate all these cars and is reliable as well
19hundo c
@Jin Kim I’ve owned cars from almost every manufacturer and it’s not that bad. C5s are that bad but C6s are fine
Jin Kim
I get C6 is good,, But most people won't tolerate the Interior and build quality of GM in early 2000s.
Zach Roether
Only thing I wish you had covered more was for the Miata: pros & cons of the soft top vs. the RF. RF probably a bit stiffer but also heavier(?). Which would you choose?
Jack Holmes
Soft top offers more room for the driver i find. Specifically head room. Rf is quieter and if your shorter it is more comfortable as a daily.
Dragon969Reviews
"Each one of these cars is going to make you feel something" FRS- I wish this had more power. Miata - I wish this wasn't a Miata. S2000 - I wish Honda still made these.
Bikemike 1
Best fun to drive car around at almost any price is the Miata. Full stop.
K Kiani
Like your shirt :)

thought this was a video from like 2015 😴😴😴😴😴😴

Does that track have a GPS in the car that beeps to let you know when you should be braking? I kept hearing beeps right before he would get to a corner. I have been to one track before and they didnt have anything like that but it would seem like a good idea for newbies
bucketfootbaseball
Next time you have the chance to chat with Dave Coleman, ask him why in the heck when the MX5 is supposed to be something you can just take to the track, why does it not have sufficient rollover protection from the factory. I have never understood why you have to get an aftermarket roll bar just to be able to do things like HPDE or track days!!!
SeenCreaTive
I wish the s2000 was that easy to find and cheap. That's easily the winner heh
Denis Bergeron
I heard that the Honda S2000 might make a comeback
Swee Yong
s2k all the way
better imvestment and resale value.
Thats_Ery_Day Life
All vehicles are steel and can rot out your claims for the 86 are confusing
NunyaBusiness
Let's, for a moment, realize that the S2000 is 1.5x as expensive when converted to 2020 dollars and is frankly a piece of shit. Terrible driving position, terrible steering, crappy interior that is way worse than the other two, suspension that will snap it around and kill you, adjustments that don't matter for the street and a serious track driver would replace with better aftermarket stuff anyway, is a lame convertible, has a powerband that's awful on the street and won't keep up with anything serious on the track, a total waste of a car.
GT86/FR-S/BRZ all day every day, it's the only one of these worth getting. If you want to go any faster get a motorcycle or a race kart, end of story.
Billy Highfill
Wow. The ultimate comparison!!! Thank you. S2k mainly. So sexy for HONDA. almost as sexy as the type r. Idk. Maby sexier.
